Abstract
From 1986 to 1992, we have analyzed clinical esperiences in 26 patients(M:F=20:6) who were underwent liver resection for 22 synchronous and 4 metachronous liver metastases from colorectal cancer at the Department of Surgery, Yonsei University
College of
Medicine. Preoperatively, 11 out of 22 patients with synchronous liver metastases wee not known for their liver metastases in spite of either ultrasonogram/computerized tomographic scan or combined studies. On exploration. 16 patients had a
solitary
liver metastasis, and 10 patients with multiple liver metastases. Wedge resection was performed in 11, segementectomy in 10, lobectomy in 4 and lobectomy with segmentectomy in one patient. When liver metastases were excluded, 70% of patients had
Duke C2
disease. Survival rate after liver resection were compared between gender, age, sequency of liver metastases, histologic differentiation, and nodal status. There was no difference at all. Those factors found to be significant determinants of
survival
were: number of metastatic hepatic deposits and size of metastases. Median survival was 21 months, 1 year survival 87%, 2 year survival 52%, and overall 3 year survival was 34%. There was a significant survival benefit in resection group compared
to
unresected counter part(21 vs 11 months).
